Any golfing region throughout this country can boast a hidden gem, and Trentham Golf Club, just 30 minutes drive off the Calder Highway heading north, grabs that title here. The club celebrated its 75th anniversary last year and has evolved from a 9-hole sandgreens layout in the mid-'60s to an 18-hole fully grassed course. Designer Kevin Hartley was commissioned to upgrade the course in the mid-'90s and, since then, two new holes and 18 re-designed greens have been built. Lush playing surfaces are flanked by tall stands of mature native trees, while the terrain varies from relatively flat to undulating, creating a superb mix of holes. The pick of the holes are on the back nine with the short downhill par-3 15th marking the start of an impressive quartet of holes leading back to the clubhouse. Considering the $30 green fee, it is remarkable how well the course is presented, which is an added bonus when you can play in such a picturesque setting ..."
